As mentioned, there are several variants of the melody taken from “The Maids of the

Mourne Shore” which was written in D major. Many folk will play the “Mourne Shore”

tune with the poem/ballad written by W.B. Yeats. The original arrangement that

Yeats followed in 1889 to create the ballad/poem was taken from another tune, “The

Rambling Boys of Pleasure” which has a slightly different feel. I followed that original

version in creating the arrangement shown above.

I used an “Irish-tuned, Low Octave Mandolin” (aka: Irish

Bouzouki) to start the tune for the first lyric set, and brought

in the Kerry Mezzo D whistle and MK1 Low-D whistle for

support.

Though not written in the sheet music shown above, I

added interest to the melody by jumping an octave up on

the Irish Bouzouki as an interim solo.

And, in the final lyric set, I play through the tune written

above again, and brought in the Kerry Mezzo D whistle,

MK1 Low D whistle, foot drum, and the Bodhran for a

strong finish.
