Storms are on the Ocean
It was Maybelle Carter that began
to showcase her distinct guitar
sound by playing both the lead and
the rhythm in the group. This
technique became known as the
“Carter Scratch,” and it became
one of the most copied styles of
guitar playing since that time.
In the winter of 1938-39, the group
travelled to Texas where they held
a twice-daily program on the border
radio station XERA (later XERF) in
Villa Acuna (now known as Ciudad
Acuna, Mexico).

The Storms are on the Ocean was
frequently played. At the start it was
played only as a man’s solo, but in
the 1939-40 season when the
children of A.P. and Sara (Janette
and Joe Carter) and those of
Maybelle (Helen, June, and Anita
Carter) joined, there were several
different versions made, some with
both the man and woman voices.
By 1936 A.P. and Sara’s
marriage had dissolved, and
Sara married A.P.’s cousin,
Coy Bayes. Sara and Coy
moved to California, and
group officially disbanded in
1944.
However, Maybelle
continued to perform with
her daughters (Anita, June,
and Helen) and rebranded
themselves as “The Carter
Sisters.”
In 1943, Maybelle and her
daughters played the show
with various performers to
include Hugh Jack (Doc)
Addington, Jr., and Carl
McConnell (known as the
“The original Virginia Boys”),
and briefly with Chet Atkins
playing his electric guitar in
1949-50.
